Union Pacific NW2 No. 1003, technically retired at the time it was photographed, awaits its fate parked at North Yard in Salt Lake City, Utah on June 18, 1977. It was built by EMC for UP in May 1940, from a roster that eventually totaled 96 units. 1003 was delivered to UP in the black ‘switcher’ paint scheme and remained so until it was repainted Armour Yellow in 1947. After retirement, it was sold to Chrome Crankshaft in Chicago, Illinois by June 1977. Information from UtahRails.net.
